Welcome to Mind Your Step, my contemplation log where I explore the subliminal psychology of our surroundings.

Our spaces have the ability to influence the way we think and act, oftentimes subliminally. But we have the ability to use those influences to our advantage, in order to design and use our spaces as tools that can augment our mental fitness.

You know that episode of CSI: Vegas where Nick was kidnapped by a lunatic and buried alive in that suffocating box. I now know how he felt. The only difference is, I’m the lunatic who trapped myself in a box.

Hi, I’m Lamar Elimbo ✌🏽

During the pandemic I spent nearly 250 consecutive days without going outside. And ever since I emerged like my spirit animal, the reclusive groundhog, I’ve noticed that my relationship with the world around me has changed.

My inner therapist tells me that my rapid change of scenery triggered a borderline unhealthy fascination with how our minds and our environments interact with each other.

In a previous life, I got my degree in psychology and worked in the mental health space in some form or another for over 5 years. While I was doing that, I taught myself to code on the side and now I’m working as a frontend developer based in Toronto, designing and developing digital environments.

I’m using this space to fully embrace my obsession with environment design by deep diving into the subliminal psychology of our surroundings. So, how about you subscribe and we can travel the world of environmental psychology together.

We could, say…

take a scenic safari through a haunted house and discuss the elements that best inspire fear.

We could hop into my time machine and visit the future virtual reality where our consciousnesses have been uploaded and question our ability to adapt to digitally immersive environments.

We could even take it easy and head downtown to sightsee and contemplate the disturbed psychology of oblivious slow walkers impeding the traffic of bustling city sidewalks.

I’ve got a heap of hot topic hot spots that I’m looking forward to visiting and I’m planning on asking 2 main questions along the way:

1. how can we use our spaces as tools to augment our mental fitness, and

2. how do our surroundings influence our thoughts and behaviours.

I’ve got a long list of topics and I’m always looking for novel mind-environment combinations, so feel totally free to hit me up with your own ideas.

Welcome and hope to see you back here soon!
