Subtraction Neglect

“In a world in which products are often marketed by touting the benefits of adding — “30 percent more” or “New feature!” — subtraction may be an underexploited competitive advantage.”

Writing Habit
I dedicated at least 1 hour for 5 days a week on writing this month. I’ve been really inspired listening to David Perell’s conversations with people on the benefits of writing online. I’ve been writing about a couple of my favourite topics: personal and environmental psychology. I’ve found these writing sessions to be meditative with the added benefit of setting aside some time to research and clarify my thoughts around these topics.

💬 Concepts & Definitions
Law of Diminishing Returns
A theory in economics that predicts that after some optimal level of capacity is reached, adding an additional factor of production will actually result in smaller increases in output.

Habit Tracking
I’ve noticed that habit tracking doesn’t work well for me anymore. I want to ensure that I’m more excited that I did a thing, than that I did that thing three days in a row. I’ve come to realise that I don’t want to put myself in the position where the streak in my habit tracker becomes more alluring than the habit itself. That, for me, is now a sign that I could be working on the wrong habit in the first place.
Law of Diminishing Returns for Objects that Bring Joy
đź”—Â / Ali Abdaal Video [2:35-3:20]
The more you have of a particular thing the less happiness you’re going to get from that particular thing. Ex. There’s a big jump from going from no iPad to having an iPad, but then you get into diminishing returns if you’re simply upgrading to a newer model.
Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles are only really environmentally friendly when they exist on an electric grid that doesn’t originate it’s energy from fossil fuels
Desire to Live Forever
I might have been born slightly too early to live forever, but perhaps because of some incredible advances in medical technology we might be able to expand our lifespans long enough to reach those things.
Creativity vs Expertise
Being seen as an expert in a field is great, but what might be even better is being seen as a creative thinker in that field.
Attention and Memory
đź”—Â / Lisa Genova Video
“We live pretty distracted lives today. We’re pulled in so many directions between the text alerts, and the emails, and Snapchat and Instagram... it’s a lot. And if we’re distracted, we can’t pay attention. And if we can’t pay attention, we can’t make new memories.”
Status Games
How we can understand motivation through the lens of the social status games that we all play. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we’re all competing with each other, when in reality we are all playing different status games.
