Happiness Is Two Scales

πŸ”— / Post /

β€œThe common way to talk about happiness is as a single scale: unhappy at one end, neutral in the middle, happy at the other end. I think that model is wrong. Instead, happiness and unhappiness are two separate, independent scales.Β A good life requires tackling each one separately.”

πŸ’ͺ🏽 My Favourite Lifestyle Changes of the Month

Chopstick Chips

Life Hack: Eat chips with a pair of chopsticks so that you don’t waste any flavour on your fingers.

Meal Prepping Dips

I discovered that learning a few good dip recipes can be a really easy, time saving, and healthy meal prep idea. Grab some flatbread and go.

Friction Reflections

During my weekly wind up I’ve started making it a habit to look back on all of the goals I worked toward in the previous week and reflect on what frictions I experienced and how I might smooth them out. It’s led to genuinely significant improvements in achieving some goals I’ve been struggling with.

πŸ’¬ My Favourite Words of Wisdom of the Month

πŸ’¬ Reminders

Be Bold

πŸ’¬ Quotes

Third Things

Third things provide a site of joint rapture.. where our gazes come together in double attention when we’re not gazing into each other’s eyes.

Universal Human Value

Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t. – Bill Nye

πŸ’¬ Concepts & Definitions

Changing Minds vs Behaviours

πŸ”—Β / YesReneau Video /

You don’t need to change the minds of people who don’t agree. You just need to change the behaviour of people who already agree.

The Third Door

πŸ”—Β / Book by Alex Banayan /

There’s the First Door: the main entrance, where 99% of people wait in line, hoping to get in. The Second Door is the VIP entrance, where the billionaires and celebrities slip through. But what no one tells you is that there is always… the Third Door. It’s the entrance where you have to jump out of line, run down the alley, bang on the door a hundred times, crack open the window and sneak through the kitchen - there’s always a way in. Whether it’s Bill Gates selling his first piece of software, or Steven Spielberg becoming the youngest studio director in Hollywood history, they all took the Third Door.

Relationship Mirrors

πŸ”—Β / Anna Akana Video /

β€œRelationships are our mirror. We learn about who we are, what we want, what we don’t want, what we need… all through our relationships with other people.”

Identity nostalgia

The desire to return to the person you once were.

🧨 My Favourite Sparks of Motivation & Inspiration

Valuing Effort Over Outcome

The value in giving yourself permission to do a bad job, for the sake of doing something at all.

Hospitality Mindset

The idea and practice of prioritising your effort toward how you make people feel and what you want them to remember.

Privileged Affirmations

Whether you live in a big city with tons of opportunities, you’ve got pretty privilege, or you’re uniquely talented at something, I’ve been finding that taking the time to recite and remind myself of my unfair advantages can be a helpful motivation boost.

πŸ€” My Favourite Realizations of the Month

Post Death Faith

My favourite mindset around the prospect of life after death is living in a future where we have the ability to upload our consciousness into a virtual reality of our own design.

I recognised recently some religious correlations this has on the topic life after death. In some respect, this idea serves as life continuity insurance if there isn’t actually some spiritual version of life after death. And yet, at the same time, I realise that this notion requires faith that this digital copy of our mind will still manifest itself as an exact replica of our cognitive identity.

Voting

Even if we don’t vote in elections or consider ourselves to be voters, we’re actually in a constant state of voting for a bunch of things everyday with our money and attention.

πŸ’ My Favourite Reflections of the Month

Retrospective Roadmaps

Creating retrospective roadmaps: timelines and progressions through/to major points in your life (your career roadmap, your romantic roadmap…).

Passive cameraman

Mini cameras that you can place around a space to periodically snap pictures. Perhaps, it uses machine learning to detect what would make for great pictures, the moments that would make for great pictures (listens for the sound of laughter for example).
