💬 My Favourite Words of Wisdom of the Month
🖌 Quotes
Don’t learn then start, start then learn.
“I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” ― Mark Twain
📘 Concepts & Definitions
Satisficing: a decision-making strategy or cognitive heuristic that entails searching through the available alternatives until an acceptability threshold is met.
Confirmation bias: the tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with one’s existing beliefs.
Fresh Start Effect: there are temporal landmarks in our lives when we’re more motivated to pursue our goals and to pursue change than others, and those moments arrive at chapter breaks in our lives. Moments that feel like new beginnings or fresh starts, such as a new year, month, week, a birthday, etc.
Lifespan vs healthspan: the amount of time that we are healthy, not just alive.
Pronoia: Feeling that the world around you conspires to do you good; opposite of paranoia.
💡 My Favourite Fun Fact of the Month
Getting sick in winter
When I first learned that some people take cold showers to promote positive health effects, I was confused since this contradicted my understanding that people are more likely to get sick in the winter. I learned this month that the reason why people might be more likely to get a cold in the winter includes:
- Dry air, which dries out our mucus membranes
- Germ hang time, where, for example, when the air is cold and dry, if someone was to sneeze in the air the germs hang around for a lot longer.
🧨 My Favourite Sparks of Motivation & Inspiration
Question posing as a cognitive skill
Question posing as a cognitive skill (creativity): Perhaps a fun habit for a short period of time would be to ask 10 questions for every piece of content I engage with.
Power of anticipation
When you want people to stay for the duration of something, give them something to anticipate at the end. Ex a professor gives their students a puzzle and tells them that the solution will be revealed at the end of the lecture.

🤔 My Favourite Realizations of the Month
Research Replication
Psychology is going through a replication crisis where a lot of the seminal research being replicated are not coming out with the original results.
Research as a Conversation
This video on the debate about ego depletion is a good reminder that no research is definitive on its own, but is just an argument in a bigger conversation/debate. It’s also a good reminder that when it comes to how I interpret research results, I’m interested in using it as a conversation starter for understanding myself, rather than being interested in how it applies to other people on average.
Do you want to be remembered?
This month I came across the question “do you want to be remembered”, and I realised that I don’t think that I care that much whether or not I’m remembered. It’s got me wondering what that says about me, so I’m looking forward to contemplating what the concept of legacy means to me.
Skill learning as a side effect
In terms of learning new things and the idea of learning through projects, it’s a good idea to think about your skill goal as a side effect of a project goal. Ex. Your goal isn’t to learn to draw, it’s to make a comic book (getting better at drawing will just be a side effect of your larger goal).

- Paradox of choice: when you have too many choices it becomes more difficult to make a decision.
- Consider its implications with dating. For example, dating in a big city seems advantageous due to a larger dating pool, but could be biased in favour of people who’ve been primed to struggle with commitment.
- One solution that people tend to use is called satisficing, which is a decision-making strategy or cognitive heuristic that entails searching through the available alternatives until an acceptability threshold is met.
