Are you a maze or a mole rat?

The built world is often designed to keep us walking within it’s lines.

Like rats in a maze, most of us walk within the boundaries.

Some of us, however, are a special kind of rat. A rebellious kind of rat. A mole rat.

💭
Boundaries are a mere suggestion to the mole rats.

If they know their cheese is behind a wall, they burrow right through it.

For every DIYed dirt rode there was the first mole rat to step onto the grass and blaze the trail of footprints for its fellow rats to follow.

In urban planning, these burrowed holes are known as desire paths.

They are people’s preferred routes across a city.

The physical signs of shortcuts off the beaten path.

The “off the beaten paths” turned to trending trails.

BTW don’t fret if you are a maze rat.

Trailblazers can be aspirational. But jaywalking to get to our cherished cheese faster can be risky business.

Choosing the life of a mole rat can be a life or death decision.
