My Strongest Interests Going Into 2023

Environmental Psychology: We cautious folk think deeply about our information diets. We carefully select our sources of input & we scrutinize how our sources affect our thoughts & behaviours. But one input a lot of us fail to dissect are our spaces. The relationship between our mind & our surroundings is a bottomless pool of curiosity for me.

Environment Design: People who design spaces think deeply about the psychology of the people who benefit from their work. There’s such a diverse array of environment designers (those who design hiking trails, tv sets, escape rooms, space shuttles…). I’m on a dedicated treasure hunt to collect as many of their golden nuggets of insight as possible.

Personal Psychology: It’s rare to come across a study in psychology that finds conclusive results for 100% of its participants. So the research-based advice that we often hear in public discourse only applies to a subset of us. I want to start listening out for the voices that acknowledge each of us as potential unique data points.

Imaginative Ideation: I was cozy in my cocoon. Each day I woke up in my own world. I'd paint spots on my wings & admire my evolving colour palette. I felt content. This morning I ventured out of my shell. A playground of butterflies were playing to see who could fly the highest. Everyone was in awe of the heights the best few could achieve. I was in awe of all the other pretty wing spots. I want my inner world to be as colourful as my outer one. So I want to focus less on expertise, and more on creative thinking.

Writing and Communication: The Sapir-Wharf Hypothesis suggests that our language can influence the way we understand reality. I want to believe in the idea that as my communication & writing skills improve, so will my perception of the world around me. As my writing becomes clearer, so will my vision for the things most important to me.
